Black + blum is an Anglo-Swiss partnership who joined forces in 1998 and based themselves London, the European heart of design. As a design consultancy black + blum advises companies on any creative aspect. This accumulating insight into different markets catalyzed the decision to develop their own range of products. It has since become a vehicle to fully explore and enjoy their creativity. Their designs have won numerous awards and are sold through selected stores all over the world.

They are driven by the opportunity to give each design its own unique character and soul. Their brief is to create functional products that will charm and entertain. They are passionate about design and realise that a true black + blum product is always a joint input of Dan and Martin’s personalities. Hopefully you will get as much enjoyment from black + blum products as we got from designing them.

Dan Black

From a manufacturing background, Dan grew up discussing products and design with his family from an early age. His passion and skill for design was recognised in a first class honours degree from the respected Design for Industry course at the University of Northumbria (Newcastle).

Dan gained further professional foresight working at IDEO (London). Frog Design (California) and under Julian Brown at Studio Brown (Bath). Dan completed successful group projects with his friend Martin Blum whilst studying in Newcastle, sparking the idea for the creative partnership that is now black + blum.

Martin Blum

Martin was born and raised in Switzerland. An early apprenticeship as a commercial clerk with a product design company provided his first insight on the development and distribution of products. He then gained an industrial design degree from the highly respected course at the University of  Northumbria (Newcastle). Martin’s cultural and design reference is a juxtaposition of his Swiss youth and enduring love affair for all things British.

Martin’s work has been acknowledged by internationally recognised design awards.

Profile: Steffen Schmelling (From Ego)

Posted under Profiles by admin on Saturday 6 December 2008 at 12:38 pm

Steffen Schmelling, designer, born in Denmark in 1965. He graduated from Denmark’s School of Design in 1990 and has had his own design studio in Copenhagen since 1991.

Steffen Schmelling has worked in a broad spectrum of design disciplines from interior products and industrial designs to decorations and sculptures.

Schmelling works for a long list of international companies, e.g. Oticon, Velux, Danfoss, Nestlé among others, and has designed Bang & Olufsen’s new MP 3 player and Samsung’s new Blue Tooth headset, which just recently won the iF design award.

Schmelling designs all products in the EGO universe, which awarded the most impressive recognition last year in the ‘red dot’ design competition with two design awards, and one iF Design Award has already been won in 2008.

Schmelling was also in charge of the interior decoration of The Danish Industrial Art Museum’s design studio and its ceramics studio selection, which resulted in the museum winning the Museum of the Year award in 2005. Steffen Schmelling also designed the exhibition concept for the Nordic Council’s “Scandinavian Design Behind the Myth.”

Schmelling has received a great number of design awards and is part of the permanent collection at The Danish Industrial Art Museum.

Steffen Schmelling’s lines are carried by two elements: The strong idea and the sculptural process.

He calls his designs Beautiful Ideas ®.

-“I start like Columbus. Believe in a direction and trust my intuition. As you know, you may find something completely different. But I always find something. And then I make a caricature of it, exaggerate it in order to find its soul.

This process has created new classics like the EGO soup spoon, the first in the world which can pour soup from all sides. The rubber bowl with the unique folding principle and the salad bowl which balances its servers. With these designs you get more than form and function. You get something extra. A feeling of finally being presented with an excellent solution to an old problem.

Even though his design is often tight and simple and when it is at its best and stands as a pictogram of its function, it is never pompous or reduced to mere function. In the simplest and in the most complex solutions, you find humour and lines that smile. This is clearly visible in the EGO water sculpture, which is formed like a cactus and can be placed on the table. Most people will be familiar as well with his opener Spirit, which has sold over 100.000 copies and has become an icon.

Schmelling’s industrial works range from fibre optical lighting and refrigerators to production equipment weighing tons. With the motto “Insight creates outlook”, he challenges his customers’ materials and technology to the fullest. A process that has gained him access to some of the largest companies.

Schmelling’s works range from design visions, jewellery, cartons, sculptures and much more. On the island of Vardø in the north eastern corner of Norway, there is a 5 meter tall and 400 kilo heavy bronze sculpture in front of the Danish Consulate created for celebration of the 400 year anniversary of King Christian IV’s journey to Norway! For the World Wildlife Foundation he has designed and constructed a full size rhinoceros which functions as a collection box.

Schmelling challenges our conventions and insists on beauty as function. He has created his own particular design signature full of essence and edge.

Profile: Michael Bruun (From Ego)

Posted under Profiles by admin on Friday 5 December 2008 at 12:35 pm

Michael Bruun, the owner and inventor behind EGO has always been a visionary man. Already at a very early stage in his career this was expressed when he received “Her Majesty Queen of Denmark honour watch” after being appointed and distinctly awarded as the soldier of the year - but this was many years as ago…

Today his reputation and experience has brought him to his own design company after 15 years of traveling around the world as the Purchasing and Commercial Manager of a quite big Danish importer. His experience has also involved him in a co-operation with other world famous Danish designers amongst them to be mentioned Piet Hein and Jacob Jensen.

His ideas and visions in the past also leaves a track of still successful designs and designer brands.

In May 2006 he decided to go his own way and followed his belief and ideas from sketches in the sand up till now. The registered brand name EGO then saw the first day of life…

His vision and passion for Danish design will lead some tracks into the future of design objects with twisted edges and will lead the design company Egolive A/S on paths which need to be discovered. Being a self-made, curious man, Michael Bruun states: “if you want to change your surroundings, everything starts in your own heart and mind…”

We hope you will enjoy and find our design touching a little of your own attitude and mind…!

The EGO universe is hard to describe within one definition. EGO is a personal dream of sensations, emotions, awareness, evolution and a desire for changing the small objects in our homes and make it a selected brand within Beautiful ideas®

Our aim is to create the type of design objects that would provide a multitude of sensual experiences, enjoyment and emotions for urban living people

It is unconventional luxury - objects you need to feel and try out…

A brand whose essence lies in its contrast. Where all objects are individual EGOs - still with the originality of smaller series - filled with innovation and strong inventive ideas as well as surprising details in their idiom and functionality

Each object carefully styled to tell its own story within the brand.

EGO has the character and the courage to stand out with a strong appeal to people curious about design.

A constantly evolving exploration of creativity.
